This relatively new regional airport has one of the best layouts for a large jet rally (including huge hanger, main runway, taxi ways, and flight line all contigious). The "make it happen" organization and staffing is in place.

Ron Colbert from Hannibal, Missouri, on the left with Steve Collins and Mark Dawson from St. Charles, posing in front of one of the several hangars at Sullivan Regional Airport. Ron perforned a demo flight with his BVM Bandit for the sullivan City Council, members of the Sullivan Airport Authority, the Chamber of Commerce, and a few other interested individuals on Saturday, September 8th. Mark and Steve are the movers and shakers behind a new event to be held at Sullivan in September, 2002.

Subsequent to the aforementioned demo flight, a powerpoint presentation, and one-on-one discussions, the tentative program received unanimous support from all the city officials to preceed with the plans for the First Annual Ozark Mountain Jet Event.

Ah, what a blessing it was for my first CD effort to come off without a hitch. I must say, I couldn't have done it without Assistant CD, Steve Collins, and Event Coordinator, Mark Dawson. I might add, the City of Sullivan, Mo., specifically Sally Joe Schatz from the Chamber of Commerce and Mark Groceman the Airport Manager made us all look good.

There was an all out effort by the City to promote the event including a live TV spot out of St Louis, radio spots and various publications. A special thanks to Lewis Patton (OMJ/JPO Mr. Top Gun) for making a trip to St Louis on the Monday before to do the live TV demo.

The airport itself is rather new and is an outstanding facility. Complement that with the City providing the entire setup: fencing, defined parking, reserved bleachers for spectators, concession stands, litter pickup, standby fire truck with firemen, not to mention a trailer load of compressed air to fill our tanks, hanger storage, public address system, etc. etc. etc. No charge for admission and free parking.

There were 31 pilots from nine states. We had sunny skies and a light wind all three days. We're looking forward to an even bigger and better event next year. We'll be doing the same thing at the same place the weekend after Labor Day (September 5, 6, and 7) in 2003. See you on the flightline!

Many of the pilots at Ozark Mountain Jets were treated to a front seat ride in this DeHavilland Twin Otter. You can see one of the excited jet pilots waving from the right seat just as the Otter rotated almost in front of pit row.

Ward Neeson (Omaha, Nebraska) eagerly anticipating his front seat ride in the Otter.

Rick Taylor (Holt's Summit, Missouri) flew this electric all foam airliner equipped with four fans under the wings.

Haddox will provide this "Find me if you can hanger in 03"!

Don Reger's (Lincoln, Nebraska) JetCat P-120 powered BVM Bobcat relaxing for another shot of battery power.

Paul Appelbaum's (Ballwin, Missouri) turbine powered Visionaire Vantage, smoker system engaged. Paul put on quite a show for the audience.

Mike Humpal's (Machesney Park, Illinois) Blue Angels BVM Bobcat just about to touch down for another nice landing.

Wayne McCosker's (St. Charles, Missouri) nice BVM Bobcat powered by a RAM500.

Ron Colbert's (Hannibal, Missouri) AMT Mercury powered BVM Bandit about to touch down after another of his many spectacular flights.

Roger Shipley's (Springfield, Illinois) AMT / USA Mercury powered Euro Firebird on Rotation.

Ozark Mountain Jets received phenomenal support from the city of Sullivan, Missouri. Here is just one example. We asked for a fire department "brush truck" to be on standby just in case we had a catastrophic crash and fire. In the photo you can see the brush truck, a pumper truck, and a compressor trailer they brought to the airport so our pilots could refill their compressed air bottles if needed.
