EVENT REPORT!!!

Metropolis, the only city in the world by that name, hosted it's 12th Annual Superman Jet Fly October 6th through October 8th. Some pilots arrived early for the WJM scale contest on Wednesday and Thursday, while others arrived as early as Monday just to start flying.

Not one to miss an opportunity to give the R/C Jet pilots just what they want, Jerry Caudle announced Superman Week for 2001 - Monday, October 1st through Sunday, October 7th. Nearly seventy percent of the 232 registered pilots flew turbine powered aircraft. Are ducted fan models becoming a relic of the past? What will the ratio be at, say, Florida Jets, the second largest event?

As usual, BVM products dominated the scene. There were five Rafales (including the award-winning B-O1, flown by Terry Nitsch at Top Gun and NATS), six or seven MiG-15s, a dozen Bandits (The BlueAngels model finally got it promised paint job. By the way, did you know Bill Harris actually signed a promissory note?), and six phantoms. The phantoms were flown by Jack Diaz, Craig Gottschang, Billy Harrod, Rob Lynch, Vernon Montgomery, and Bob Violett. Rob Lynch logged approximately 20 flights on his new F-4 modeled after the No. 1 Thunderbird of the 1970s. Rob dazzled everyone with his incredible aerobatics just like he did earlier in the year at Mississippi.

Also, as usual, the event featured the latest creations by a large number of manufacturers from both far and near. For example, the JMP Firebird, Tom Cook's (Kansas City, MO) latest creation or FiberClassics Eurofighter from Germany. Superman also featured many large airplanes such as Scotty Buldoc's Panther; ANKs F/A-18E Hornet; Century Jets Cougar (Blue Angels scheme), and the F-86 scratch- built by Shalish Patel. Without a doubt, the most spectacular creation of all … the AMTusa Concorde (powered by four AMT-450s), built by Jim Weigle.

Don't forget, there's a week of flying scheduled for Superman 2001. See you on the flight line early Monday morning.
